In small amounts, alcohol can cause blood vessel dilation which increases circulation. This is why people report feeling warmer while they are drinking. Excess drinking can cause high blood pressure and heart disease.

      Hi 325hthj1724,
      Thanks for this question!

There is some truth in your question; moderate intake of alcohol can cause vasodilation which is the widening of blood vessels. This allows for improved blood flow and is the reason people may feel warmer soon after starting to drink. However, too much alcohol does weaken heart muscles hence compromising the heart’s ability to pump blood optimally.

So improved circulation is not the only effect alcohol has on the circulatory system, and knowing the whole truth is critical in establishing a balance. The effect alcohol has on it’s consumer is partly a function of the amount taken. Do let me know if I should clarify anything.

      Hi 325hthj1724,

Alcohol can boost blood circulation by causing blood vessels to dilate as reported by Marta and Sammy.

Excess alcohol consumption can however cause dehydration(which leads to decreased fluid in the body which can reduce/impair circulation). Alcohol decreases the body’s production of anti-diuretic hormone, which is used by the body to reabsorb water. With less anti-diuretic hormone available, your body loses more fluid than normal through increased urination. Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can also cause vomiting, which depletes the body of fluids and can cause further dehydration.
