In a closed room the burning charcoal can consume all the oxygen and release carbon monoxide. Sleeping in such a room makes you breathe a large amount of carbon-monoxide(which has no odour/smell) and is a dangerous gas.
Normally oxygen binds to a molecule in blood called haemoglobin and is transported to body tissues/cells to enable them to function properly. When carbon monoxide binds to haemoglobin it prevents oxyen from binding to haemoglobin. This deprives body tissues/cells of oxygen impairing their function/metabolism.
This leads to unconsciousness and in some cases death if someone is not removed quickly from such a room.
